Terence Tao’s SIX MATH ESSENTIALS Out in the UK

BY Sheena Meng

Terence Tao’s SIX MATH ESSENTIALS lands in two weeks! In anticipation of our pub date, we’re excited to start seeing enthusiastic coverage of Terry and his book across the pond. The UK edition, SIX MATHS ESSENTIALS, is out today.

In a profile-interview with The Observer’s Science editor James Tapper, Terry ponders the fallout from tech companies dumping hundreds of AI-generated proofs and shares his belief that “maths is half science, half humanities.” Mathematicians, he says, “care about the outcome but also the process, how we got there, what we learned on the way.” That is precisely the kind of mathematical thinking that Terry gifts us in SIX MATH ESSENTIALS. In their review for New Scientist, Karmela Padavic-Callaghan calls the book “a short and accessible invitation to even the most inexperienced reader to give maths a chance, and also a helpful starting point for deeper future reading.”

Terry also appeared on several podcasts to talk about the book. On BBC’s More or Less, he explains how SIX MATH ESSENTIALS reveals the “connective tissue” linking the seemingly abstruse work of mathematicians to everyday life—for example, how Johannes Kepler’s answer to Sir Walter Raleigh’s question about how to efficiently pack cannonballs onto a ship helps ensure reliable phone calls and data transmissions today. He elaborates on how his book’s six central math concepts feature in our lives and in what’s happening in his field on BBC Science Focus magazine’s podcast Instant Genius. “Many lay people have a very strange idea of mathematics as some sort of sorcery that only a small number of people can do,” he says. SIX MATH ESSENTIALS is his way of opening the door to everyone.

And for any of our readers who are puzzle aficionados, Terry contributed a guest puzzle this week to Alex Bellos’s Guardian puzzle sets. Like his book, the puzzle “naturally introduces algebraic ways of thinking [that] can give some valuable initial intuition.”

SIX MATH ESSENTIALS publishes November 10 in North America — preorder your copy today.

We’re also eagerly anticipating three fall events featuring Terry and his first popular book:
